Open data and sources

Everything this map publishes can be downloaded, reused and corrected by anyone, without an account and without asking us. The points come from OpenStreetMap and go back there: we take from a commons and we maintain it.

It contains 561 of the 582 points published on the map. Points still to be checked and archived categories are not included — distributing data we consider unpublishable would make no sense. The 15 reported broken ARE included, each carrying its state and the date it was reported: a dataset that hides the fountains known to be out of order is less useful, not more careful. The other 21 are on the map but not in this file: their only source is fontanelle.org, which declares no licence, so we show those facts one by one and do not redistribute the set.

Licence

Point data © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. You may use, modify and redistribute them. You must attribute OpenStreetMap and release any derived database under the same licence.

The partner businesses’ details are NOT included and are not ODbL: they are proprietary data, merged only in memory when the page is built. A shopkeeper who did us a favour does not get their name licensed under share-alike because of it.

Who checked, and the number that matters

A check has an author, and 93 of these 582 points have one: they are the things that break — water points and toilets — and their cards carry the name. Entries signed “· ORTOLANO PISA” would be ours, walked in person; there are none yet. The other 489 carry no author: static things carry the source and the day we read it, and the 15 reported broken carry the date and the name of whoever reported them. The date shown is always the real one, including when it is old.

Points walked by us: 0 / 30 — none yet. Everything published so far was checked by other people, and we say so rather than take credit for it.

From sources without a declared licence we take single facts — the author and the date travel with every point, and are in the file above — and those points are on the map. What we do not do is redistribute their set: the 21 points whose only source is fontanelle.org are excluded from the file above. Datasets with a non-commercial clause are excluded entirely: Ortolano belongs to a company.

What we give back

Every check we make on foot goes back to OpenStreetMap with its date and the #tappapisa tag, so anyone can use it — including us. It costs ten minutes and turns a borrowed piece of data into an open one.

If this project closes, the checked points stay on OpenStreetMap with their dates. That is the difference between leaving a city thirty real data points and leaving an expired domain.

Found a mistake?

The “Works? No” button is the fastest way to tell us: it is on everything that can break — fountains, toilets, study spaces, parks, useful services — but not on the 228 monuments, where asking whether a fifteenth-century square still works would only suggest we do not know what we are showing. You can also correct the point directly on OpenStreetMap: the correction reaches us too, at the next import.
