The problem
Litter scattered in streets and squares. Many people would like to do something, but an improvised clean-up can go wrong: bags left in the street, dangerous objects handled bare-handed, no one to pick the bags up.
How it should work
A small pedestrian area, chosen after a site visit. A group supervised by three leads. Only ordinary litter is collected, in pairs, and the bags go where the operator has said, with a pick-up agreed in advance.
What exists today
The format is written: 90 minutes, a small group of adults, three roles to assign. There is not yet a person in charge, a date, a place, an agreement with Geofor for the pick-up, or open sign-ups.
Before it starts
Before announcing a day, we need a named person in charge, the site visit, a written agreement with the operator for the pick-up, guidance from Geofor and the Comune, and checked insurance cover and emergency procedures. No embankments, riverbanks, roads open to traffic, building sites, railway areas or private land. Household waste collection doesn't count as an agreement for the day's bags.
Next concrete step
We're preparing a first litter pick in Pisa: a small area, a supervised group and an agreed pick-up. We'll publish the date and place when the organisation is confirmed. If you're an association and can help us organise it, write to us.
The proof we need
An area checked at the end and a report within 48 hours: who came, bags by type, who picked them up, costs, what didn't work. The weight stays “not measured” if no one weighs the bags. If the pick-up fails or there's an incident, everything is reviewed before doing it again.
The planned format
- 90 minutes: welcome and instructions, collecting in pairs, closing and handing over the bags, final check of the area.
- A small group of adults. No minors in the first trial.
- Three roles, to be assigned: one responsible for the day, one for the collection and pick-up, one for the welcome and the report.
- Taking part is free. Wear closed shoes and suitable clothes, and bring your own water.
- If you're not collecting, you can help count or document, from a safe position.
What isn't collected
Syringes, sharp glass, batteries, unknown substances or containers, possible asbestos, animal carcasses, bulky items, electrical appliances, medical waste. Closed bags aren't opened and you don't put your hands where you can't see. You stop, keep the group away and tell the lead. In immediate danger, call 112.
When it's cancelled
Weather alert, storm or wind, unsafe ground, lead absent, not enough materials, pick-up not agreed, area not accessible. The notice comes on the same channel as the announcement. We don't move to another improvised area.
Who can help
- Want to take part? For now there's nothing to sign up for: the date and place will appear here once confirmed.
- An association: help us organise the first day in Pisa.
- Write to perdiqua: info@perdiqua.com
What we don't do
- We don't publish a date with a place still to be decided: first the pick-up agreement, then the meeting.
- We don't promise to fully clean up an area and we don't replace the public service.
- We don't estimate kilos from the bags and we don't turn the result into CO2 without a method.
- We don't sign anyone up to a newsletter. No recognisable photos without consent.
- No fundraising and no sponsors on the first day.
